0:00 as many of you know 0:02 ticking noises in the gm 5....

    0:00
    as many of you know
    0:02
ticking noises in the gm 5.3 seems to be
    0:05
a very common issue the four eight five
    0:08
    three
    0:09
    and six liter six two
    0:11
uh five three more prominent probably
    0:13
    because it's most popular motor
    0:15
so what do i have now
    0:20
    got a silverado
    0:23
    with a ticking noise
    0:25
he says he has to let it sit
    0:27
in order to hear it so he drove it in
    0:29
here so i have it sitting now and it's
    0:31
cooling off because he says once it gets
    0:33
    cool
    0:34
you'll hear it he goes and then after a
    0:36
    few minutes it goes away
    0:38
he says he changes his oil regularly and
    0:40
uses the correct oil dexos 0-20
    0:45
but he still seems to have this issue he
    0:47
doesn't know why he says he's looked at
    0:49
himself he says he does most of his own
    0:51
work but he just can't figure it out
    0:55
    so what could it be
    0:57
    sits
    0:58
    gets cold or cools off
    1:01
    then it happens
    1:03
on a when he first starts it
    1:07
    then it goes away
    1:09
    so what's
    1:10
    changing it's changing his temperature
Diagnosis: Lifters vs. Exhaust Leaks vs. Ignition Coils
    1:14
so it could be a couple things
    1:16
    could it be lifters absolutely
    1:19
    now
    1:20
    the lifters themselves create the
    1:22
problem it's not the lifters themselves
    1:23
making the noise the noise that you
    1:25
actually hear when these things tick is
    1:27
    excessive valve lash
    1:29
uh because the lifters go bad or wiped
    1:31
out a camshaft which is possible
    1:34
    and
    1:35
then it starts tapping you actually hear
    1:37
    excessive clearance between the rocker
    1:38
arm and a valve or the push rod and a
    1:41
    rocker
    1:42
usually it's the other way around
    1:43
    usually it's rockworm and valve
    1:46
but normally those type of ticks don't
    1:49
    just go away
    1:50
    a faulty lifter
    1:52
    whereas the
    1:53
hydraulic portion inside is not staying
    1:56
    pumped up
    1:58
usually that can do that where when it's
    2:00
    cold it'll create that problem
    2:02
what's another thing that can create
    2:04
    that problem
    2:05
    exhaust leaks
    2:07
a lot of times exhaust leaks will
    2:08
    straighten themselves out
    2:10
so i'm just waiting for this to cool off
    2:14
and once it gets cold enough then i'm
    2:15
    gonna
    2:16
have somebody started or i might start
    2:18
it myself and i'm gonna check it for
    2:19
exhaust leaks i got a funny feeling
    2:21
that's what my problem is going to be
    2:24
as you saw in my other video
    2:26
with the tapping noise in that 5.3 that
    2:28
turned out to be an ignition coil
    2:31
whereas the wire had actually popped out
    2:33
why did i have no idea customer didn't
    2:35
know either it just happened so i got a
    2:36
funny feeling when it was assembled from
    2:38
the factory that thing was never
    2:39
    installed correctly
    2:41
now that video was over a year ago and i
    2:43
still see that customer still driving it
    2:45
has not never had an issue again that
    2:46
    problem never cropped back up
    2:49
this is the same design motor i did take
    2:51
    a look just to see
    2:52
    i don't see anything
    2:54
    so
    2:55
let's let it cool off and we're going to
    2:57
    find out what happens
Preparing for the Cold Start Test
    3:00
all right so i'm going out to that
    3:01
    silverado
    3:02
it's been sitting for about three or
    3:04
    three and a half hours
    3:06
and i got my little trusty step stool
    3:08
    with me
    3:10
so the thing sits a little bit on the
    3:11
    high side
    3:13
so i'm gonna start it up
    3:15
and hopefully it's gonna make the noise
    3:19
let me get my little step stool in
    3:20
    position here
    3:24
make sure i get a good vantage point
    3:26
    here
    3:30
yeah it looks pretty good got a pretty
    3:31
    good gate vantage point
    3:35
all right let's see what she does
    3:38
first thing i'm going to do is put the
    3:40
key and roll the window down
    3:42
    i like to be prepared
    3:59
if i could even reach in and do what i
    4:00
    wanted to do
    4:03
    no i can't
    4:04
    think sits up too high
    4:06
    my arms aren't that long
    Capturing the Ticking Noise Live
    4:19
that sounds like it's the other side
    4:33
    so
Finding the Culprit: Broken Exhaust Manifold Bolt
    4:51
and there you go that's an exhaust link
    4:53
that noise see all the carbon there that
    4:56
    back bolt
    4:58
    is broken
    5:23
    so
    5:24
that's a relatively common issue the
    5:26
    problem is
    5:27
the bolts snap off in the head
    5:30
    and i i believe what's happening is
    5:33
    the expansion contraction the exhaust
    5:35
    manifold is creating that problem
    5:37
    and that's why they break
    5:40
    shut that off
Final Verdict & Giving the Customer the Good News
    5:43
    so
    5:45
there we go another ticking 5'3
    5:48
    that's not the camshaft
    5:50
so just kind of weird i mean i had that
    5:52
one video where the ticking was the coil
    5:55
    and um
    5:56
then this one and then i did have one
    5:58
with a bad cam and unfortunately i never
    5:59
made a video of it that's when i first
    6:01
started the channel and i just made it
    6:03
like a short and you can see in the
    6:04
short you can see the one rock arm not
    6:06
moving because it had a bad lifter
    6:08
    uh but anyway
    6:10
so that's it i'm gonna call a customer
    6:12
give him the good news actually because
    6:14
that's not that's not terrible news but
    6:16
it's still it's gonna get kind of
    6:17
involved and if he decides he wants us
    6:20
to fix it that's great then i'll make a
    6:22
video of that and show you what's
    6:23
    involved in fixing that
    6:25
so that's it for now i hope you got
    6:26
something out of that video if you do
    6:27
hit that like button if you could please
    6:29
subscribe tell your friends to subscribe
    6:30
    also
    6:32
all right that's it have a great day
